Great Falls is one of the main cities that is found along Montana's portion of the Lewis and Clark Trail. It was Lewis and Clark who were the first known white visitors to the area, which they happened upon while navigating the Missouri River. At Great Falls, the Missouri River drops some 500 feet, which results in a rumbling set of rapids and waterfalls. Hence the city's name. Lewis and Clark were forced to portage around the rapids and waterfalls at Great Falls during their famous Corps of Discovery expedition, and nearly a month passed until they moved on.
Like many other Montana cities, Great Falls didn't start to gain identifiable status until the late 1800s and early 1900s. It was during this time that Great Falls Montana became both an important railway stop and a thriving industrial center. The city's waterfalls were used to create hydroelectric power, which also helped it to grow into a major supply center. As Great Falls quickly became one of the larger cities in the state, visitors began arriving to get a glimpse of the falls for which the city is named. They also came to see the studio of artist Charles Marion Russell, who was born in St. Louis and moved to Great Falls when he was a teenager. Russell specialized in painting scenes of the American West. He also made bronze sculptures and was an accomplished author and storyteller. When Charles Marion Russell passed away in 1926, the local schools shut down so that the children could watch his funeral procession. Today is the party hosted by Laura Bray at katydiddys! As I was madly taking photos of my two wee one's rooms, I realized that they weren't up to showroom quality. I mean, who wants to see Tinkerbell undies strewn across the floor, or Barbie shoes sprinkled on the carpet? I decided that since the unmade beds & dollhouse debris wouldn't make for impressive snapshots, I would take pictures of special things in my girls room instead: close up shots that make you THINK the atmosphere is tidy.

We moved into our house 5 months ago & you'd think that would be enough time to get settled in. But, it's not. I'm not sure what the problem is, but my girls' rooms don't have that warmth & "homey" feel to them. They've shared a room for the past 2 years, so this is the first time they've had their own rooms. Maybe I just need to give them (& their rooms) some time to find their own decor identity. Anyway, I hope to get some ideas from other participants in this blog party on how to make their rooms more cozy & girly & less cold & uninspired.

The picture at the top is how I store my oldest daughter's dress-up attire. The large puffy dresses get hung right on the wall above her bed! It's artwork, it's a dress, it's artwork, it's a dress.

I painted the hangers to make it "extra special". And look! It's a cupcake! This was one of my very first cupcake paintings, about 5 years ago--long before I realized that I loved them so! I think I copied it right from a catalogue.

My daughter's pink bed is one of my favorite pieces. My mom picked it up at a garage sale for 3 bucks. I wish I had a "before" shot. It came with a headboard & footboard--but it belonged to a bunk bed. It was nasty looking. I sanded it, painted it, distressed it, waxed it, added finials to the posts & adorable white wood embellishments to each end. It was a lot of work, but well worth it. It was a surprise for her 2nd birthday---a big girl bed!

And I LOVE using mismatched linens--both old vintage & new vintage-looking. My oldest has pinks & blues & my youngest has yellows & greens.
I found this drawer to an old desk in someones trash! I added vintage kitty wrapping paper & hotglued buttons to the outside & now it hangs above my daughter's desk & holds her precious keepsakes. Free stuff rocks.

Hanging under the drawer is a banner I made. I found some vintage "ABC" clipart online & copied them, punched holes in them, strung some ribbon through, & swagged it above her desk. It's not only decorative--but useful: she refers to it often when stumped on her alphabet.

A trip to a nearby pottery painting studio resulted in this adorable hanging sign.

Artwork is very important to me & my kid's get to put theirs just about anywhere. Zoey decorates her door with loads of paintings & drawings.

I love the wooden letters you see at craft stores. And the wacky odd sized letters are right up my alley. I painted them out in different colors & hung them with that tacky putty stuff.

I also gave each of my girls a painting when they were born. Pazely has this above her desk.
Another cool find was this piece. I was told it is for holding patterns?? I use it to hold my girls magazines & coloring books. It sits in our living/dining room right next to a baker's rack which is FILLED with their art & creative supplies.

This is weird, but everywhere we have ever lived I have always had an obsession with making the girls bathroom cute. I love bathrooms! They are tiny & make-over pretty quickly.

The shower curtain rings were purchased from the Target $2.50 bin. I added the vintage buttons.

Above the girls towel rod is this vintage hand mirror that used to belong to my grandmother. I hung it on the wall at kidlet height so the girls can see themselves---you know, for that final check before heading out to play.

I love being "hands-on" in my girls' rooms. Most of their things have been thrifted or handmade. A lot of inspiration comes from books or magazines. Better Homes & Gardens puts out really cool Special Publications about "quick & easy decorating" or "kids' rooms". I snatch these up when I see them because they give SO many great ideas.

Ice Luxury Hotels, Sweden

If we said the Explora Hotel on Easter Island was the most isolated luxury hotels in the world, we were wrong.

The IceHotel is the latest, craziest name on the Luxury Hotel circuit and it's 200 km north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden.

It's the world's first ice hotel and it's exactly what it says on the packet - a hotel with over 80 individually designed rooms, a bar, reception, and even a church, all made entirely out of blocks of ice taken from the nearby Torne River.

Colder than ice
You'll be wondering what the weather's like inside this baby. Rest assured, it's pretty damn icy, between 17 and 28 degrees Fahrenheit all the time. You can't even warm yourself up in the bar, because all the glasses are made of ice too. No warmth for the wicked.

And how about snuggling up at bedtime? Thankfully, although the bed's made of ice, they've thoughtfully covered it in reindeer skin and provided a thermal sleeping bag to keep your bits from freezing off. Here's the hotel's advice on going to bed:

"Dress in warm thermal underwear, put on a hat and slip into the cozy sleeping bag. Share the whole surrealistic ice-night with someone special. Let it be a night to remember."

No doubt.

Warming up in the morning
Staff come to thaw you out in the morning with a mug of hot lingonberry juice, whatever that is, and then stuff you in a sauna until you can move again. You'll spend your day ice fishing, moose tracking, or skating about on dog and reindeer sled trips. And in the evening, you can come back and stay in one of the hotel's separate heated cabins. By all accounts, one night in the IceHotel is enough of an experience for anyone.

Whose idea was it anyway?
Trust the French to have come up with this crazy idea. The IceHotel was born when French artist Jannot Derid held an exhibition in an igloo near the village of Jukkasjarvi, Sweden, the location of the current IceHotel. The town's limited accommodation was packed out and some guests had to spend the night inside the igloo. They must have been the trendy crowd, because the idea caught on.

If you're in Paris, not Lapland, you can have a similar (shorter) experience at the Kube Hotel, which has an Ice Bar along the same lines.

Nice Prices
A night in the freezer will set you back anything between 1120 and 5200 Swedish Kronors (US$175 to US$815) per person sharing a double room, including breakfast. The hotel only exists between December and April - in summer, the whole jamboree is dismantled and thrown back into the river.

With its home on the Royal Way, the hotel has location, location, location - guests can step right out into the buzzing heart of Warsaw. This is the grandest hotel in the capital, and it has some presidential suites to match.

Changing the tune again, but remaining in the luxury hotels bracket, there are a number of business style hotels that are also worth a look. Back in the late 1980’s the then biggest cheap holiday company in the UK called Sunmed secured some great little holidays to what was then a pretty fresh and relatively unknown new holiday destination. Turkey. Apart from the locals themselves no one really holidayed there or had even considered it before Sunmed introduced their Go Turkey brochure to the general British public, and although Sunmed Holidays are long gone, in the last twenty years Turkey has developed and flourished into a fully fledged holiday destination contender and positioned itself into the top three holiday destinations not only for the Brits but also the rest of Europe.

Whilst the neighbouring Greeks’ attraction lies in the multitude of islands that you can choose from, the attraction of what was once Asia Minor (geographically speaking it is still Asia Minor), Turkey’s attraction lies in it’s sheer size stretching from Asia all the way down to the borders of Syria and therefore fringing North Africa. Each coast line has its own unique personality to cover all tastes and all holiday requirements you may have. The Aegean Coast of Turkey was one of the first established areas, with the Bodrum Peninsula with its myriad selection of resorts, small and large, quiet and lively with the added bonus is that transfer times from the airport are a little under an hour, which in the summer is a godsend. Further up the coast Altinkum’s metamorphosis from sleepy village to a bustling harbour town, brimful of ex-pats buying villas and apartments and actually living there has been truly meteoric. I remember begging my clients in the nineties to holiday in Altinkum and give it a chance and now within the last twelve years alone, Altinkum is one of the few resorts in Turkey that is booked at full capacity from May till October. Then of course you have what I call The Five Star City, Kusadasi where you have several kilometres worth of four and five star hotels offering Turkish All Inclusive to suit all budgets and tastes. The nearby attraction of Ephesus offers a double whammy of interest; ironically enough it was the first fully fledged Christian City in the World, the birthplace of a young Mary better known as the Mother of Christ, and of course the very famous Temple of Apollo. All this bit of Turkey may sound quite amazing but as you travel down the coast of Turkey and past the Bodrum Peninsula past the Aegean Seas and into the Mediterranean Sea you will get to see plenty more sights and sounds that definitely have that ‘Wow’ factor you feel when in Ephesus but for different reasons. The region of Fethiye for example with its very famous coast line, the Turquoise Coast and Olu Deniz in particular has acquired by now almost legendary status as the best beach in Turkey. In fact several years back it was voted to be in the top five beaches in the world, I remember been a bit dismissive when I heard that, until I went there, distinctly remembering the very loud ‘Wow’ that escaped me, I must admit I was instantly smitten! There are plenty of beaches on our little planet that have the ‘wow factor’, but Olu Deniz IS special; it is nestled in a valley, behind Olu Deniz where Hisaronu and Ovacik sit overlooking the bay of Olu Deniz and for you to get to your holiday in Olu Deniz you need to drive through a very drab Fethiye City up towards Hisaronu, your right side completely obscured by any view of the sea, and then by some divine miracle as the taxi turns right at the small T section at the end of Hisaronu, you are instantly faced with this astonishing slash of turquoise that devours the horizon before you and you simply cannot see where the sea and the sky meet nor care to be frank. Barring the obvious natural beauty of Olu Deniz the other things that make it practically perfect is the lack of gargantuan Hotels offering All inclusive and therefore downgrading the area, Olu Deniz is small and compact, they have stringent building laws and it was one of the very fist resorts in the Med to adopt an Eco Tourism approach, part of the blue lagoon is completely blocked off from tourists and locals to allow the Caretta Caretta Turtles to nest.

Further along the coast and further away from the wonders of Fethiye we come across the leviathan resort of Marmaris with its little neighbour Icmeler. It has long been a firm favourite with British Tourists who do not want to be too far away from the comforts of home, for instance McDonalds is a very familiar point firmly ensconced in Marmaris and the bright lights and loud nightlife of the harbour end of Marmaris calls its nightly siren song to all those who still have boogie in their hearts. Surprisingly enough despite the fact that Marmaris doesn’t really have the great beaches of Fethiye or nearby Dalyan, it still has much to offer in terms of things to do for those whose idea of anathema is staying on the beach and reading to be akin to them having pins inserted under their nails!

Dalyan of course is another firm favourite especially with a select bunch of ex-pats, who had been begging the local council to purchase property there for many years, before the ban on foreign nationals purchasing local properties was lifted a couple of years ago. Dalyan has a history spanning all the way back to the times of Kaunos and apart from the geological beauty of the area, you also have the Kaunos Rock Tombs, think Rose Red Sea of Petra but in Turkey and in Rock silvers and greys. It’s also another dramatic looking resort, and frankly I hate using a generic word like resort to describe what Dalyan is, as it is an ancient town that has been around for several thousand years. With its lake and the river that runs through the town with all the Kaunos Rock tombs on one side, the water taxis can cut through the river that runs into the Med and deposit you on virgin white beaches that rarely see any souls, and as for all those film aficionados the Very Famous African Queen with Bogey and Hepburn was filmed here!

The last bit of the destination tour of holidays to Turkey is the Antalya Region, which was first found by the German Tourists before the Brits started to creep in five or so years ago and it is also the only part of Turkey that is open twelve months of the year, enjoying on average more sunshine a year than the rest of Turkey and extraordinarily mild winters it is an inexpensive winter getaway and a more than reasonably priced summer destination, with uncountable All Inclusive hotels both big and small in resorts and cities spanning several hundred kilometres you are spoilt for choice. Side is quite amazing and still incorporates in the city centre the old Roman Market walls and arches into its current architectural setting that bellies the incredible history of this thriving port that was once the epicentre of all trade in the thriving centre of the Middle Eastern trade Routes between Egypt, Syria and Rome.

In finality holidays to Turkey has very much to offer the discerning traveller, from its rich and bountiful history to gorgeous safe beaches and plenty of shopping to keep even the most fidgety difficult traveller happy!

Way back in the early nineties when the Red Sea came into prominence it was only Taba and Eilat just over the border that was known to the select few diving enthusiasts that had ‘discovered’ what that part of the world had known for a few thousand years before that ‘discovery’, that the Red Sea and the coral reefs nestled therein where pretty astounding; lets face it The Red Sea was parted by Moses himself, mentioned in the Old Testament so it wasn’t exactly a secret now was it, I mean how many people have read the bible? So to be fair let’s say this area was rediscovered by some diving enthusiasts, who fell in love with the gentle lapping waters of the Red Sea framing the golden sands of the desert. I have a strong belief that some parts of this world have a direct effect on your psyche, an effect that cannot be quantified or fully explained by the written word or the spoken word until it is seen by your very own naked eye, felt in the first breath of air you breathe in your lungs and felt with the warmth of the sun caressing bare arms and if you are lucky maybe a teeny tiny bit of breeze. This is what I felt back in 1992, when I crossed the desert from Eilat through Taba to the then unheard off Sharm El Sheikh with a select few travel agents been introduced to this part of the world. We travelled by coach across desert terrain, that was so uniformly golden it looked like we were in Gods very own brown crystal sugar bowl, I half expected a big old spoon with a mighty big hand to scoop up some desert sugar to stir into His imaginary coffee (my God drinks Coffee sorry tea lovers) that’s how I felt, but I have been known to have a fantasy life equal to Walter Mitty, so once again I am digressing and waxing lyrical. That was of course then, this is now, and in the last 17 years alone the little unknown resort with its two solitary hotels standing alone at the edge of the desert that I first came upon when I was first in Sharm el Sheikh has undergone a metamorphosis worthy of mention. At twenty four kilometres long this little desert place in Egypt has become the top holiday destination for us and our European cousins’. It is littered with a wide selection of five star hotels offering either very sophisticated ultra modern five stars like the Four Seasons Resort or smaller and more affordable three to generic tourist five star hotels, most offering all inclusive, but as a rule of thumb All Inclusive Hotels can get a bit repetitive after five days so be warned. Personally I have never really like the concept of All Inclusive, I much prefer exploring local foods and culture and staying in small and friendly guest houses, but nonetheless given the nature of Sharm El Sheikh holidays and the fact that it’s a purpose built resort, unless you are prepared to go deep into the desert and hunt down some very shy Bedouins puzzled by the mad English Person who is trying to go local, All Inclusive is the best option, of course if you are going to stay around Naama Bay, Sharks Bay or Ras Om El Seid Hill, you can get away with small BB’s and eat local but as most hotels stretch over some serious kilometres along the coastline of Sharm El Sheikh then All Inclusive is easier by far! If you are going on an All Inclusive Holiday in Sharm, remember that no two five star hotels where ever created equal, price IS the indicator here.

You have Tourist fives, and Family fives, and of course luxury five stars, an experienced travel agent will point you in the right direction and remember tripadvisor.com may be a good source of feedback both positive and negative, however, I have known many a client been undone by the good marks and points given by the people who have looked at Sultan Garden’s for example, but, and this you need to take into consideration, the Sultan Gardens is absolutely perfect if you are going as a family with children in tow, but an older couple with no children may find the Sultan Gardens teeming as it will be with lots of families with kids, doing what kids do on holiday may result in the hotel been unsuitable and a tad overwhelming, this means you would not enjoy it as much, so when you are looking at advise websites you really need to actually read between the lines and check out who has posted the review. Apart from where to stay of course Sharm El Sheikh is known for its diving and what a place to dive it is, if the Garden of Eden was meant to be beneath the sea, then this is where it would be. Once you have a snorkel on and your head submerged beneath the sea you are in a different world, a world brimful of colour, with every coral and every fish imaginable just there in front of you, you get to see the yellows and purples and the turquoise of all the darting little fish, the sway of sea anemones and the brain coral and best of all you are there, sensing and touching all these new and wonderful techni-coloured visual stimuli which bares no comparison to you gazing in brochures and on the internet at all the photos and snapshots.

While the official grand opening blowout isn't scheduled to go down until later this month, the NYT had a chance to pop into the London West Hollywood and, surprisingly, christened the hotel with a sparkling review -- a good bit of positive press after the "meh" reviews its much-hyped Gordon Ramsay restaurant has been receiving.

Though the hotel is still partially under construction (the reviewer mentioned the rooftop pool was a no-go zone), yesterday's Times "Check In, Check Out" feature gave props to the hotel's location, acknowledged the "disarmingly helpful" staff and gushed over the rooms:

All rooms have a balcony or terrace, and I woke up to a sweeping view over Beverly Hills. The décor by David Collins Studio is both flamboyant and muted. A wall was covered with parquet veneer and chairs had faux-alligator upholstering, but the colors were washed out, and the open-plan suite felt serene.

Sounds like a pretty sweet night to us, especially since the reviewer got to pass out after delivery from Chin Chin. Yum.

We're sure the night would have been topped off perfectly with a drink in the lobby bar -- but it's not open yet. But the Times promises us that "by fall, when the lobby bar opens, it'll be a scene." We'll wait.

The only guest experience problems mentioned in the piece were noise-related, as the hotel faces Sunset Boulevard (where the loud drunks are stumbling in and out of Whisky a Go Go). Get a room facing South.

We've gotta acknowledge what a great feat it is for a hotel to score a great review in the early stages of its existence (especially during that yucky working-out-the-kinks period after a soft opening). We remember when Thompson Beverly Hills opened and it still had some, uh, issues.

Right now, rooms at the London West Hollywood are starting at $299.

We were surprised that the most expensive hotel room in Las Vegas--a private villa at the Bellagio--is only $6,000 a night, but hotels in Sin City are always lower than average since hoteliers know the real money will be blown on gambling. The Bellagio has nine separate villas in a quiet corner of the property. Each villa has a private terrace and pool, which is surrounded by topiary shrubs, chaise lounges and outdoor tables. Every villa has a private butler service and private limousine entrance.

Not that anyone actually sleeps in Sin City.

The villas are both two and three bedrooms and come with a kitchen, dining room and fully stocked bar according to guests' preferences.
